The Athens Double-Barreled Cannon, located in the downtown core, is another must-see for those who want to learn about the city’s Civil War history. This cannon was designed and built in 1863 by a local entrepreneur hoping to secure a contract from the Confederates for his invention, but it never saw active service.

During the Civil War, Athens was a relatively peaceful town with no major battles or raids. The local economy rebounded quite quickly thanks to the booming armaments and textile industries that grew in response to wartime manufacturing.
