The City of Trees

A trip to Athens isn’t complete without a stop at the city’s famous “tree that owns itself.” This oak tree was willed to itself in 1942 by William Jackson, son of a former governor. Though legal scholars are skeptical, the story is interesting and well-known.

The City of Music

Athens is known for its world-renowned music scene, and it has nurtured some of the biggest bands in the world, such as REM, the B-52s, Widespread Panic, Drivin’ and Cryin’ and Pylon. You’ll find echoes of those big names in the darkened rooms of music haunts like The 40 Watt Club and the Georgia Theatre, and even if you’re not a die-hard fan, there’s no shortage of fun to be had.

The University of Georgia is a major part of the Athens culture, and if you’re lucky enough to get a seat at a game in Sanford Stadium, there’s no better place to enjoy a tailgate or cheer on the Dawgs! If you’re not a football fan, head to the nearby rooftop bar of the Georgia Theatre for an excellent view and tasty eats.

Herty Field and Fountain

If you’re looking for a relaxing spot to relax on a sunny day, Herty Field is the perfect spot. Bring a blanket and a picnic, and you can soak up the sun in this beautiful park, which is known for its large fountain and Herty statue.

The people in Athens love to hang out on their porches. Whether it’s a front porch or back porch, they make it their own and enjoy spending time outside.
